Finding the best types of roses can be a confusing task when you consider the multitude of varieties that are available. Here are a few suggestions that will help you produce beautiful roses that are sure to be the envy of the neighborhood: Ask your local garden center or nursery about the best types of roses to plant in your particular area. Different climates require different kinds of roses if you want to achieve outstanding results. If you are a beginner, be sure to choose disease-resistant rose bushes, as they will require less maintenance and care. You must choose a spot to plant your rose bushes that is well lit in the mornings and that will receive at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sunlight each day. You must have well-drained soil with a PH level 5.5 to 7.0. You will be able to find a testing kit at your local garden center. The test kits are quite inexpensive and could save you a lot of difficulties after planting your rose bushes. When planting your roses, include plenty of organic matter in the soil surrounding the plants. Make sure the roots of the rose bush are very damp and well fertilized before you actually plant it. If you are planting roses that have very little soil surrounding the roots, soak the roots in water or puddle clay for several minutes and cut off any roots that are damaged or broken before planting. The first few weeks after planting rose bushes, you should water thoroughly and often. When the top two inches of soil surrounding the plant becomes dry, water the ground until it is completely soaked. After your roses have become established, soak your bed approximately every two weeks for best results. If you live in an area that is extremely dry or hot you may consider watering more often. Be careful not to over-water your roses and it is best to water in the early mornings. For the best results, plant rose bushes in the early spring after any danger of a freeze has passed. Also, the rose should be planted in an area that is open and gets plenty of air circulation. Roses do not grow well in a tight or enclosed space. Ever since I was a little girl I have just loved candles! I would spend ages just watching their lovely glow and taking in the aroma as they burned. I couldn’t imagine life without them. Now, our own home is always beautifully decorated and scented with wonderful candles. While you can get many gorgeous looking unscented candles, I love to have scented candles burning. Smell is our most powerful sense in making us feel a certain way or taking us back in history to those special moments.

Our sense of smell has a memory so you can use smell in a very positive way to evoke wonderful feelings of happiness, calmness, that holiday, festive feeling etc. I am almost put into a trance every time I smell Jasmine as it takes me back to my nanna’s special, loved filled country garden where we shared so many irreplaceable moments. And I bake a special Choc, Fruit, Sherry Slice that was my Mothers pride and joy special recipe at least once a week so that I feel like I am back home with her in her kitchen helping her cook. She died young in 1999 at only 53 years of age and that is one way that I feel very close to her. Smell makes things very real!

There is nothing nicer than going to visit a friend and as they open the door to greet you, you are welcomed by the most delicious or uplifting aroma. You immediately feel at home. Scented candles offer this unseen but most important aspect in our homes - scent, smell, aroma.

Now that Spring is here I have to confess - I have completed contracted the “Spring Cleaning Bug” and been almost fanatical about decluttering, cleaning out cupboards and opening up spaces. I am enhancing our home and its new “Spring Clean” with candles that have fresh, clean, floral fragrances. My current favorites are Frangipani and Rose Geranium.

Last NAN I explained how to petition the female Saints with special requests. This time around I’ll provide some instruction on how to ask to be put in the cosmic care of the Male Saints . These are very ancient pagan rituals, which have been popularized by the Christian Church. The basic methodology is to put your request under the appropriately coloured candle on the suggested day of the week along with an image of the Saint (which you can often find on the Internet) and/or a symbol or emblem that represents the Saint.
Saint Anthony of Padua
On a Tuesday burn a brown candle for special requests, a green candle for financial help or an orange candle to find a husband. St. Anthony’s is a wonderworker when it comes to finding lost articles, improving the memory and bringing back a strayed lover. His emblem is the lily.
Saint Alphonsu Liguori
On a Thursday, light a purple candle to ask for help with sore, aching muscles, joint pain and arthritis. Anything to do with the bones.

Saint Christopher
No Wednesday burn a red candle for protection from accidents, sudden death, and against storms. Christopher protects motorists and travellers so he is the one to pray to for a safe journey.
Saints Cosme and Damian
Burn two green candles on a Wednesday for help with doctors and health, to get a correct diagnosis and for general physical protection. He can also clear obstacles from you path.
Saint Cipriano
On a Saturday burn a Purple candle to protection from womanizers, liars, cheaters, and negative attitudes. He helps homeless people and those who have been convicted from getting a heavy sentence.
Saint Expedite
On a Thursday light a yellow candle to settle disputes, curse your enemy and to reverse a negative situation around. This is who you petition to if you need things to change quickly or suddenly.

Candles have been around for many, many years, but it was not too long ago that candles were just a means of getting some light in a room when the power went out, and they were a necessity for such emergencies. Nowadays, the role of candles has changed. Some are beautiful works of art which it seems a shame to light, others are a custom scented candle lit and used for relaxation purposes, with their perfume permeating the air. Candles are used for decorating rooms, too. The choice is yours, and you have a wide array of colours and shapes to choose from.

Nothing says relaxation and romance like a candle lit room. It seems to make the rest of the world disappear from sight, so you see only that which is in the candle’s light. This is a good way to forget the worries of the day, and is an inexpensive way of doing so too. Give it a try one evening when you feel stressed and feel the tension disappear in a puff of smoke as you light your candles.

Candles are available for purchase in a variety of places, from basic emergency candles in the local hardware stores, to wide selections in the local dollar store, to beautiful artistic creations in home decor stores. There are candles for every occasion too, for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc., and for people with a variety of interests. Some candles have flowers in them as decoration, others are decorated with shells, or imitation fish or … there is a lot of choice out there.

Along with the huge variety of candles, and the ability to make your own custom scented candle, comes an equally large variety of candle holders. To make the burning of candles as safe as possible, they need to be in a safe holder, or on a plate or in a tin, but even so, there are candle holders that appeal to all sorts of different tastes. There are wall candle holders as well as candelabras, and numerous glass containers of various shapes and colours that, provided the candles are inserted properly and the glass placed on a flat surface, will be safe for you to burn.

Another advantage of candles, is that you can easily make them yourself, decorating them, colouring them, and adding essential oils to make a custom scented candle to help set a certain mood. Candle making is a good project for a family and a way of making inexpensive gifts at any time of the year and for any occasion. You can also make candle gift baskets with the theme, or colour scheme of your choice.

You can vary your candles too by using soy instead of paraffin wax, or bees wax for more environmentally friendly candles, or you can use gel for candles. This is available in many different colours and shades, and is very effective. Of course you can use different shaped containers for the wax, tins or jars and you can decorate them as you see fit. Or you can make floating candles, using a wide base for the candle to help it float.

The choices for candles are many, but there are advantages to a custom scented candle. You can make it the shape and colour of your choice, and with the scent of your choice, or you an use essential oils to turn it into an aromatherapy candle. Make your choice and enjoy!

One of the questions that I am asked most often on the realm, is colour of candle should I burn for what purpose? And when…

As there is no book out there called Candle Burning for Dummies, I thought I would give you a quick crash course in the correspondences of colour candles to magickal purposes. As a practicing witchlet, the first thing you must do is learn how to

a) pray your heart out and
b) laugh maniacally.

As far as I’m concerned, no spell is complete without fervent wishing and praying followed by a maniacal laugh (to seal the spell.)

The second thing you must do is familiarize yourself with the phases of the moon. It is best to do most magic from the New Moon to the Full Moon period when the moon is waxing. During this period, cosmic or astral energy is building and this is best for if you want to attract something to you … like a lover, more money, more gerbils or whatever. From the period of the Full Moon to the next New Moon is best for banishing spells — getting rid of negativity, stalkers and the like.

www.artcharts.com has a nice ephemeris on it that tells you where the moon is each day. This site also tells you when the moon is what is called avoid of course?… you don’t want to start burning a candle while this is going lest your cosmic energy go astray … of course if you have a question about whether a night is a good night to burn a candle, you can always email one of the psychics (Mary Helene, Ruella, David, Lydia and myself are good choices) to help you with the astrological aspects.

RED candles burnt during the waxing mood period are used to attract more love, lust and drama into your life. They are especially good to burn during the three days leading up to the full moon to heighten the erotic tension. They can also be used during the waning moon period to drive a rival away (especially if used in conjunction with black candle.) However this is manipulative magick and could have some bad karma attached to it.

ORANGE candles bring you love, joy, luck, happiness, feasting and luck with children and pets. Wanna go to more parties? This is the candle to burn.

GREEN candles increase cash flow and bring steady work. They represent growth, fertility, abundance and opportunity. Combined with a black candle during the waning moon, they can help remove financial obstacles in your way.

YELLOW candles are for both spiritual and material riches and help align your will with the heart. This is the colour to burn you are confused about your career or professional matters…this is the colour you want. It can also help you buy that new fridge or car.

PINK candles bring tenderness, equilibrium and help you manifest the higher qualities of love in your life — patience, faith and compassion. Like orange, this can also be a fun candle and bring delight and surprises into your life. For a real lift, trying burning a yellow orange and pink candle together.

BROWN candles can help ground your energies to the earth, make you feel connected to reality. This is the candle to burn if you are feeling spacey or are suffering from feelings of low self esteem

BLUE candles help you focus and find solutions to the problems in your life. Serenity, beauty, grace and self-control are summoned by this candle. It is also a candle that is associated with peace and mercy, so it is a good one to burn if you feel oppressed by creditors or picked on by people.

PURPLE candles can be very decadent or very holy depending on what your intent is when burning … purple is the colour of the eccentric, the bon vivante, as well as the colour of wisdom and royalty. This is the candle to burn if you feel like life has gotten a little boring lately … it will bring you back into the sexy dance of life.

VIOLET is the colour of the higher self, and is good to burn when you need to connect to your higher self. It enhances intuitive abilities and is a good colour to burn when you feel you need to let go of someone or something .. stare at the flame and throw all of your worries, concerns and burdens into the violet fire. Ask the angels to provide you a solution to your problem.

BLACK. I rarely burn a black candle and I don?t know why … black candles are grounding and often associated with negative rituals and energies…on the other hand they are also used for protection. They are the colour to burn if you feel threatened or sabotaged. As the black candle burns, picture all the negative energy melting away…

WHITE candles are the all purpose candle. When in doubt, use a white candle. A white candle burnt with another coloured is said to clear the energies to allow the colour to resonate through space. Use them as “helper” candles. Alone they represent, peace, purity and the connection to the higher realms, in particular the angels and whoever perceive God to be…

Remember that when you burn candles, it is your intent that matters the most. This kind of ritual depends on synchronicity, so make sure that when you make you wish, you picture or act out the scenario in your mind as vividly as you can … and don’t forget to laugh maniacally when you’re finished. The cosmos likes a person with a sense of humour:)

The autumn months of September and October are when roses perform at their peak. After faithfully following proper rose procedures up to this point, now — at last — you should begin to reap the rewards of full, vibrant, glorious blooms. Your work isn’t quite done yet, however. Although autumn is the best growing time, it’s also the time you must prepare your rose bushes for winter coming onslaught. Producing those beautiful blooms you are so proud of is hard work — for your rose bushes, too. They need a lot of water to fuel the flowering process. Continue to water them deeply, as often as needed to maintain growth. Watering daily is okay if you are showing them off, just be careful and observe closely so that you do not over-do the watering process. You want beautiful blooms, not drowned roots. Continue using water-soluble compost through the end of September. Consider a commercial bloom-boosting fertilizer. The large number in the middle of the formulation is your cue — nitogen, PHOSPHORUS, potasium (potash). Black spot and mildew are dangerous because conditions for their growth are ideal, so keep up with a vigorous spraying program through the end of October. Stop all fertilizing by the end of October, to let your roses begin the hibernation process. You can continue to cut rose bouquets through October without causing any harm to the bushes. To encourage rose hips to form, just remove the petals of the dead roses. Fall just happens to be the right time to start planning next year’s garden. Order new flower catalogs for your research during the dark and dreary months of winter. This is my favorite part — all fun and no work. To get your best selections possible, place your new roses order early. Rose growers know when the best time is to ship new bushes to your climate zone. If you keep these rules in mind, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful rose bushes. The first rule in pruning roses is to remove any dead or dying growth. In doing this, your bushes will look good and will be free from signs of diseases. Removing the deadwood will discourage insects from making your rose plant their home. Insects love rose plants so keep an eye out for them while pruning. Second, you should keep the center of your rose plant clear. This helps keep your bushes clear from pests and insects and allows good ventilation, which reduces the likelihood of fungus growth and other diseases. Third, it is important to keep your rose plant away from other bushes so that their growth will not be impaired. If your rose plant is disturbed or overcrowded by other plants it may not grow, as you desire. Fourth, you must shape your rose bushes while they are growing. This will prevent the roses from growing too wildly. If you do this, your roses will grow properly in the right direction. You will notice some roses growing in different directions. These are roses, which have not been shaped during growth. Fifth, you must use sharp pruning shears. This is important so you make a clean cut and don t effect the areas that you are not pruning. If you use a pruning shear that is not sharp, it may result in uneven branches, which can hinder or result in uneven growth. Sixth, you must clean your pruning shears so they are free from diseases or fungus spores. The shears should be kept dry to prevent rust formation which makes your shears dull. If your shears are not sharp, you will have a hard time cutting the desired parts and will end up damaging the branches. And lastly, you should seal the cuts you have made so that they will be free from disease. Using Elmer s glue works well and it is inexpensive. Roses are considered tolerant plants so pruning roses is important to keep them free from diseases and insects. If you follow these basic rules, your roses will flourish and live for many years. It only takes a little patience and your efforts will be well rewarded. About the Author: Jo Williams has an interest in Home and Garden Topics. While glass and metal candle holders are the most popular, there is an absolutely huge variety available, in all sorts of materials. This handy checklist will help you make the right choices without having to spend hours on the task. As you run down the list, you will see that as you make decisions you are led naturally to the right kind of holder and the right kind of candle.
Making your own is also an option if you have the patience and skill - or perhaps just the patience!

1 The event

Are you going to use the candle holder as an integral part of the event, or do you want the candle to be a minor accessory?
If it’s a seasonal event, such as Easter or Christmas, one of the many plaster candle holders might be suitable.

Once you’ve got the setting for the event clear in your mind, you can move easily to the next point to consider, which is…

2 Size

If it’s a statement you’re after, think big and bold because anything less will probably not achieve the effect you want. But big and bold brings its own problems - solid colors probably won’t work. Think vines, ivy, and espalier multiple candle holders, which lend themselves particularly well to larger arrangements with a number of tea lights or small jars. If you’re going this route, you can probably justify wholesale and/or discount quantities.
If intimate is your objective, then go with tea lights or small jar or container candle holders.
If you want to go to the opposite extreme, then chandeliers can add a delightfully unusual touch if you have the right place to positon them, which leads to…

3 Siting

Where are you going to position the candles?

For instance, if you’re going for a combination of scented candles and food (and you should think very carefully about that particular mix) then the holder needs to be off to one side, substantial enough to be noticed and to be left unattended in safety. You want to please your guests with a suggestion of a fragrance, not overpower them or the food.
If the setting is more intimate, then smaller is better. Don’t force your guests to crane over the candles to hold a conversation.

4 Color

On some occasions you will want to match the colors in your rooms, and on others you’ll be going for contrast.
You also don’t want to restrict yourself to just one color of candle, so you need enough holders to allow you to mix and match. Remember that boldly-colored holders are more difficult to match to the candle color and to your decor.

And once you’ve decided on the right color, you’ll be led naturally to the appropriate….

5 Material

Even though you’ve narrowed down the options, there are still some wonderful decisions to be made.

You can choose between wood, bronze, silver, crystal, aluminium, metal candle holders, wrought iron, beaded holders, or natural products such as bamboo and coconut.
Glass is obviously popular. You can either choose a completely neutral holder, or choose a colored holder that will match the candle color. Glass is particularly appropriate for votive candleholders.
Hurricane candleholders are popular for pillar candles and are wonderful for al fresco dining. Remember to look for one with a handle if you will need to move it while still hot. Then you only have to decide on …

6 Shape

There are a large number of animal and character shapes available, although these have to be matched carefully to the occasion. Bees, birds and butterflies (particularly pretty when matched to tea light candles) are popular and are available in solid and transluscent colours.
Consider slate pillar plates for the really big or multi-wick candles; in fact, lovers of pillar candles can find a wide range of coasters and plate holders, some of them beautifully decorated.

7 The candle itself

By now you should have eliminated a whole lot of possibilities; the holders you are still considering will almost choose themselves.

For instance pillars, which tend to be chunky anyway, require more substantial holders than more delicate candles.
If you’re going to use votive candles, remember that they must be burned in a holder, because votives are really container candles without a container. If possible go for a straight-sided container as long as the rest of the design pleases you.
The straight sides will reduce the wax pool that is formed when the candle burns, and the tighter the fit, the longer the candle will burn.
And finally, if you’re in a languid mood, what about the charming bowls, complete with stands, that are specially designed for floating candles?
